Hi there !

A / an is called the "indefinite article".

1. When to use a; when to use an

Use a before a consonant sound. It is usually pronounced with neutral vowel.
Consonant = b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,,w,x,y,z.

Take for an example : He's a doctor. What a nice picture.

Use an before a vowel sound. It is usually pronounced with the neutral vowel.
Vowel=a,e,i,o,u.

Take for an example: He's an actor. What an ugly picture.
