Friendly Register

Dear All,

I trust you all well ?

Writing in friendly register

When writing in friendly register, be careful not to make your level of language too informal. Do not include the following three feature which are often used when speaking to a friend:

1 Words, phrases or sentences structures which use slang :

(a) I like to chill out at the beach (not recommend)
(b) I like to relax at the beach (recommended phrase)

(a) Hanging out at the club is real cool. (not recommend)
(b) We enjoy going to the club (recommended phrase)

(a) My Mum. well she kinda like freaks out when i tell her about... (not recommend)
(b) My mum gets upset when i tell her about...(recommended phrase)

2. Words shortened to look phonetic (in other words, to look the way they sound), such as :

(a) How ya doin ?(not recommend)
(b) How are you (recommend phrase)

3. Text message/SMS-style phonetics, such as 'u' for 'you' , or small 'i' instead of 'I', or a number to represent a word, for example '4' instead of 'for' , and so on:

How r you ? (Wrong)
How are you (correct)

On the other hand, when writing in friendly register be careful not to make your level of language too formal :

Take for an example : Social interaction can be one of the benefits of sport.

In short, you should :
1. Simplify your language as much as possible.
2. Use simple words to explain or replace bigger words.

ie replace social interaction with mixing and getting on with people.
ie replace benefits of sport with one of the good things about sport

One of the good thing about sport is that you get to be with people and learn how to get on with them.
